“A Place Is Not a Word” is a cinematic dream diary about Krems: made up of fragments, found objects, home videos, cityscapes, views from windows, and random moments. Over 200 film clips from the 20th century, supplemented by cinematic impressions from the local population, weave together private memories of forgotten and everyday things and micro-stories with official images and collective memory to form a participatory video essay. About the artist Miljana Nikovic—architect, researcher, and video artist—explores cities and memories through experimental film forms. As an “architectivist,” she brings archives to life in a spatially poetic way. Instead of soberly documenting historical facts, she rediscovers spaces: speculatively, sensually, and always with an eye to the people connected to them. During her artist-in-residence stay in Krems, in cooperation with ORTE, she collected extensive film material that shows Krems from very personal perspectives. Some of these recordings can now be seen on the big screen for the first time.
