Emma Stroude
Working primarily in the mediums of oil paint and charcoal, I make figurative paintings and drawings exploring performance, embodiment and empathy.
I develop source materials through collaborations with circus performers, actors and dancers. The conversations, ideas and photographs generated during these collaborations act as starting points for investigations on paper or canvas.
My compositions are carefully selected moments of performance chosen for their connection to my own personal experiences and feelings of empathy towards the roles played by the figures. The bodies in my work are vessels that hold histories. ideas and metaphors. During the creative process archetypes emerge and poses suggest familiar stories embedded in my DNA and shared across cultures. Connections to the work of artists and writers, both contemporary and historical, become apparent. All this leads to further research and learning that informs and enriches each work. Recent works have found links with ideas found in the writings of Virginia Woolf and feminist artists Paula Rego, Rebecca Horn and Ana Mendieta.
The investigative process of rendering the figures in paint or charcoal imbues each piece with my own story but in extension to this, these works reach towards the viewer and seek empathy for a shared human experience.
