Bernhard Ammerer
Viennese artist Bernard Ammerer (born 1978) paints mental images and imagined realities. Committed to the classical media of oil and canvas from the outset, he sees painting as the ideal means of expression for his subjective perceptions and observations, which in most cases appear figurative, realistic, and constructed. Only recently has Ammerer turned his attention to drawing—portraits broken down into their constituent parts in the form of small stick figures.
Bernard Ammerer leaves little to chance in his painting process. The artist collages and deliberately, analytically, and concretely determines the composition for his medium to large canvases. Associative interventions complement this process, while sketches of ideas – “image ideas in the mind” – precede the whole. The mostly large areas of white space, partly intersected by geometry and lines, give the events an erratic quality. A compositional tension that defines Ammerer's art.
