In recent years, Axel Koschier has developed a series of works that examine the fundamental structures of artworks and build on everyday objects and elements of his artistic routine.

For the exhibition entitled “A EL,” he produced a series of transfer prints that deliberately oscillate between the established categories of art production. What initially appears to be abstract painting turns out to be prints of digital photographs, but at the same time unique pieces produced manually using a transfer process. The motifs are based on reproduced, photographed paintings—neither clearly painting nor clearly printmaking, but a hybrid form in between.

The image carrier—a smooth, densely woven cotton fabric on a specially thin, self-built wooden frame—also deviates subtly from common formats and material qualities, contrasting with the usual pre-primed canvases found on the art market. The abstract motifs open up multiple interpretations and evoke associations with various imaging techniques: from abstract expressionism to technical imagery familiar from computer tomography or thermal imaging cameras.
