Since September 2025, the former chapter house of the Dominican monastery has been home to the „Contemporary History Workshop“. The new exhibition is dedicated to the eventful modern-day history of Krems. With the help of various objects, some of which originate from the people of Krems, important topics from the city’s more recent history are critically examined and questioned.

    Tension between democracy and dictatorship

In a total of four sections, the exhibition addresses the central—and highly topical—question of how a democracy can turn into a dictatorship. The exhibition builds a bridge between the “long nineteenth century” and the present day. The importance of remembrance work is linked to the question of learning from history. The „Contemporary History Workshop“ is not a conclusive project, but rather an invitation to engage with history.
