The golden apricot
Art, nature, and craft traditions – Creative workshop
The Wachau region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comes to life in a varied guided tour through the Lower Austrian Provincial Gallery. The paintings depict castles and ruins, magnificent monasteries, steep vineyard terraces, and blossoming apricot orchards—a cultural landscape that was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000.
The exhibition provides fascinating insights into the history, nature, and culture of the region. Authentic objects such as emerald lizards, ground squirrels, gold bonnets, and Kalmuck tell of regional peculiarities. Interactive elements such as traditional costume fabric samples to touch and sound stations with animal voices make the tour a sensory experience. Works by artists such as Tina Blau-Lang, Marie Egner, Anton Faistauer, and the monumental “Panorama of the Danube Valley with the Ruins of Dürnstein” by Anton Hlavacek (1906) illustrate the artistic significance of the Wachau region.
The creative highlight: gilding Wachau apricot pits
Following the tour, participants can look forward to a special experience in the studio of the Kunstmeile Krems art gallery: with gold leaf, artistic sensitivity, and attention to detail, they will transform the pit of the famous Wachau apricot into a sparkling souvenir under professional guidance.
