Scan2VR

Kunstmeile Krems and eVRyLab, IMC FH Krems

Research and development of innovative art education tools in the field of virtual reality.

Project duration: October 2018 - December 2020

The research project Scan2VR aimed at researching and developing meaningful VR technologies in museums. The cooperation between Kunstmeile Krems and IMC university of applied sciences Krems is based on the idea of a house of digitalisation with digital networking.

In the first step of the project, exhibition spaces of the Kunstmeile Krems were captured with 3D laser scanners. Scans of artworks are transformed into virtual reality with the help of automated algorithms and visualised using VR glasses.

As part of a project a VR App was created that combines a selection of art works from the digital collection of the State Collections of Lower Austria with a digital museum space.

With this app museum visitors can curate their own exhibitions in a virtual, but seemingly real museum space: making digitalised art experienceable in virtual space by interaction and participation of the visitors. This playful approach to exhibition design helps to experience the museum in a new way, while teaching that the presentation of artworks is very flexible and that an artwork can have different effects on the viewers depending on its position in the room and combination with other works.

Visitors of the State Gallery of Lower Austria can try out the MyExhibtion-App at a VR-station every Saturday Afternoon. The aim is for users to curate and set up exhibitions themselves in virtual space and thus experience art and museums in a new way.

Intended audiences

The project is an innovative research project that has a broad media resonance. Target groups are the scientific community in the VR field and in the museum field. On the other hand, the application will be adapted for end customers to enable them to have new virtual museum experiences and in-depth interactions with works of art.

The eVRyLab

With the eVRyLab, founded in 2019, IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems has succeeded in creating a highlight in the field of movement in virtual space and thus becoming a pioneer in digitalisation in Lower Austria. The eVRyLab team is working on many different research projects. One of the highlights: the OmniDeck - a round "treadmill" for physical movement in virtual space that is unique in Austria.

Project partner: eVRyLab - IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems

The project was funded by the Lower Austrian Department of Economy, Tourism and Technology and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

MonA - Museopedagogy and Augmented reality

November 2019 – February 2022

MonA - Museopedagogy and Augmented reality was an international research project on digital applications in art education. The project aimed to bring together cultural and educational institutions through the use of modern technology.

The project partners included nine museums and (university) research centres from Europe. The focus is on the joint development of integrative digital mediation tools in museums (onsite and online) for the target group of schools. The focus was on augmented and mixed reality applications. Local partner schools supported the product development through regular feedback from the target group.

The project combined basic research with the development of digital teaching tools. Based on the current state of research and best practice examples from the field, a guide to museum education with the use of modern technology was written. Furthermore, a virtual museum tour, an AR game and an app were developed as practical applications in education.

The project was funded by the European Union within the framework of Erasmus+.

NOEDIkOM

Research project

The Kunstmeile Krems is part of the exciting digitisation project NOEDIkOM under the lead of Prof.(FH) Mag. Michael Reiner from the IMC Krems.

Lower Austria has an infinite number of hidden gems, whether they are beautiful spots in historic villages, historic buildings or unique works of art and spaces that are hardly known. The digitisation of such gems brings with it many strategic opportunities. On the one hand, the tourism aspect can be seen, which is about promotion and visibility locally or at tourism fairs all over Europe. On the other hand, the awareness of the population can be expanded, who often do not know about such treasures in Lower Austria and can be informed specifically via different platforms. Another point is the preservation of art and culture as well as historical buildings. The 3D models can be used for reconstructions before restoration in order to give experts access to the respective objects.

In cooperation with experts from the Kunstmeile Krems, the project has selected objects and cultural spaces in order to digitise them in different ways (laser scans, photogrammetry, drone recordings, 3D reconstruction). The resulting digital models and recordings will then be embedded in corresponding applications (depending on their use) and curated for mediation purposes.

In the course of the project, the applications developed will be used to evaluate the general acceptance of such digital implementations and which of them are of particular interest to cultural institutions or people interested in culture. This should provide new scientific insights into the benefits and possible applications of digitised cultural objects and spaces and their mediation.
