TEACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED ARTS VIENNA

This exhibition focuses on the academic side of the artist Adolf Frohner, exploring his artistic network during his time as a teacher at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Legendary: Frohner‘s “Abendakt“ class

Between 1972 and 2005, Frohner held various positions at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. First as associate professor of nude painting, then as full professor, head of the masterclass for painting, dean and vice-rector.

In particular during the time when Frohner led the legendary “Abendakt“ class, his evening classes in nude studies, he used to gather his colleagues and students around him, making his Abendakt class a hub for vivid exchange at the university. Together with Hannes Androsch, who was Bruno Kreisky‘s Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister, Frohner organised the exhibition series “Konfrontationen”, where students could make their first appearances in front of an audience.

The exhibition bridges Frohner’s realism, Oswald Oberhuber’s post-modern undertakings of pushing boundaries and Helga Phillip‘s concrete painting. By including Hans Hollein‘s visual creations, the exhibition shows a generation that succeeded in consistently rethinking concepts.

Artists: Adolf Frohner, Hans Hollein, Maria Lassnig, Oswald Oberhuber, Helga Phillip and others
