Three Decades From Schiele To Schlegel From Private Collections

The exhibition features a rapid trajectory across the art of the 20th century. Roughly 150 pieces by 30 artists from important private collections show how three periods set the stage for the contemporary visual and stylistic language in Austria: the years from 1908 until the end of World War I, the decade following World War II and the 1990s.

The first section of the exhibition explores the years of the Vienna Kunstschau 1908 until 1918, when Vienna is the world’s fifth largest city and one of its cultural and intellectual centers. For the generation of artists surrounding Egon Schiele, this means a novel understanding of the human, whose constraints and fragility are recognized beyond his façade.

The years after World War II are marked by the awakening. New avant-garde movements emerge under the most adverse conditions. Paris and New York become the catalysts of the surreal and the starting point of abstraction and action painting. The epoch‘s young generation of artists, including Arnulf Rainer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Maria Lassnig, gained groundbreaking significance that will last for the rest of the 20th century.

The 1990s as the third decade examined bring a new, united Europe after the Fall of the Iron Curtain. It is the time that immediately precedes the great breakthrough of the Internet and anything seems possible. Genres and movements exist side by side, Peter Kogler’s computer-animated image systems and Eva Schlegel’s pictorial, blurred photographs are in juxtaposition with Elke Silvia Krystufek’s excessive self-interrogations and Erwin Wurm’s “One Minute Sculptures”.

The exhibited works are made available by private collections such as Rudolf Leopold, Jenö Eisenberger, Roman and Margot Fuchs, Peter Infeld, Ernst Ploil or Helmut Zambo as well as by the private museums Angerlehner and Liaunig. Some of the works will be on public display for the first time. The artists include Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl, Alfred Kubin, Koloman Moser, Arik Brauer, Matthias Herrmann, Brigitte Kowanz, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Florentina Pakosta and Heimo Zobernig.
