Krems Karikaturmuseum Krems Karikaturmuseum Krems Ausstellung

Excursus # 4

Portrayed through the artist Rudolf Angerer’s cheerful point of view, the Karikaturmuseum Krems puts a new spin on the usual narrative of the Nibelungen saga. Angerer’s cartoon version of the “Nibelungenlied” dates back to the early 1970s and features much black humor. The exhibition features 25 originals from the Lower Austrian State Collections.

One of the most important German heroic epics of the Middle Ages, the Nibelungenlied was written in the 12th century by an unknown author. Penned in the Danube region, probably in the area between Passau and Vienna, it is considered the oldest written reference to the Nibelungen legend, which has seen different versions with varying emphases told through the ages.
