Krems an der Donau museumkrems museumkrems

An international architectural phenomenon also in the vineyards of the wachau valley

Artist Renate Löbbecke deals with the global phenomenon of corbelled dome buildings. The corbelled dome is a fundamental building technique that allows to build a room just with the stones lying around on site and without any supplementary means as wood or grout.

On her travels in 20 countries – from Iceland to North Africa – the artist kept record of this building technique, impressive due to its rudimentary architecture. In the Wachau valley with its landscape characterizing stone terraces you find examples as well for this international architectural phenomenon. Renate Löbbecke tracked down those corbelled dome buildings in numerous vineyard cabins. The musemkrems exhibits a selection of her photography.
